The most common wish when it comes to a facial treatment is to achieve a fresher and therefore more youthful appearance. From around the age of 30, many faces benefit from softening negative expressions that can make us look tired, tense, strict, insecure or worried.

These signals are especially visible in the upper part of the face through the contraction of the eyebrows – the so-called frown lines – or by raising the forehead, which leads to the formation of horizontal forehead lines.

Many people contract these muscles completely unconsciously, particularly when concentrating or feeling stressed. This can quickly create a tense or exhausted facial expression, even when a person actually feels very different internally.

A gentle smoothing of the upper facial muscles, particularly in the forehead and eyebrow area, can lead to a noticeable relaxation of facial expressions. The face appears more open, calmer and fresher – without losing its natural appearance.

The goal of the treatment is not to change facial expressions, but to reduce unwanted muscular tension. The result is a relaxed appearance that is often perceived as refreshed and well-rested.

People in the patient’s personal environment often react exactly this way: a close friend, partner or colleague may notice that the person somehow looks fresher and ask whether they have just returned from a holiday – without realising that an aesthetic treatment has been performed. The result should never look “overdone”, but completely natural.

How do muscle-relaxing wrinkle treatments work?

The neuromuscular relaxant is a protein obtained from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Three preparations containing this active ingredient are currently approved in Switzerland, but only one of these is for aesthetic applications.

The active ingredient inhibits the transmission of excitation from the nerve cells to the muscle, so that the contraction is weakened or completely eliminated, depending on the dosage. The effect only occurs in the direct injection area. It takes around 7-10 days for the protein to take effect in the muscles; the maximum effect is achieved around four weeks after treatment. With the dosages commonly used in the aesthetic field, systemic remote effects are practically impossible. Once it has set in, the effect lasts for weeks to months. After around three months, the effect slowly diminishes and full recovery of muscle activity usually takes around six months.

Wrinkle treatment with this active ingredient is carried out on an outpatient basis. Under sterile conditions, the doctor injects the protein into the desired facial muscles using a fine needle. The entire treatment – including the consultation – takes around half an hour. The patient can return to work or other activities immediately afterwards.
