The appearance of stretch marks is quite normal during pregnancy, they are then called "stretch marks" (lat. striae gravidarum).

However, other causes that are associated with a rapid increase in the volume of areas of the body, such as rapid muscle growth in bodybuilders, rapid growth or massive weight gain, can also lead to such stretch marks. Medications such as cortisone can also cause striae.

Fresh stretch marks often appear reddish, the color is caused by translucent blood vessels.

The striae tend to appear where the tissue is under the greatest strain due to an increase in volume, such as the stomach, hips, buttocks, upper arms and breasts. The causes are a weakness of the connective tissue with reduced skin elasticity and weight gain (fat or muscle).

Development of stretch marks

The connective tissue in the dermis, which is responsible for the elasticity of the skin, consists of a network of collagen fibers. If the connective tissue is overstretched, this leads to irreparable tears in the subcutis, resulting in externally visible blue-red stretch marks. Over time, the marks fade but remain visible as light-colored scars.

Treatment of stretch marks

The treatment of stretch marks consists of various methods and is individually adapted to the findings and expectations of the patient.

In the case of reddish striae, the focus is on treating the discoloration. Silicone-based scar ointments or creams containing vitamin A are suitable for this. Carboxytherapy is also used depending on the findings. The last option is to use a laser (IPL flash lamp).

The fractionated CO2 laser is particularly helpful for deep stretch marks, as it leads to a leveling of the skin and stripes. The skin becomes even again and the "canyons" disappear. Having stretch marks lasered is the most effective method of achieving an even skin texture. In many cases, the treatment even achieves a return of the tanning pigment. For an optimal result, several to many treatments are often necessary, consisting of laser application and carboxytherapy.

Exactly which treatment is used and combined is part of the treatment plan, which is always created individually according to the wishes and needs of the patient during the non-binding consultation.

Methods of stretch mark removal

Carboxytherapy
Carboxytherapy is a non-surgical method in which carbon dioxide is injected into the tissue under the skin via a small needle (0.3mm diameter). From the injection site, the carbon dioxide spreads rapidly into the surrounding tissue and works in two ways: It causes vasodilation, leading to a significant increase in blood flow. Immediately after the treatment, the skin becomes warmer and slightly reddened. The improved blood circulation leads to increased oxygen in the tissue. The result: Stretch marks are regenerated by the improved blood circulation and oxygen and are built up with new tissue – causing them to fade.

Fractionated CO2 laser
The new laser works with a completely new high-tech technology developed by leading laser technicians at Harvard University. Thousands of microscopically small light columns penetrate deep into the skin layers with computer-calculated precision and remove old, damaged cells and pigments. An untreated area of skin always remains around the individual light columns, from which the microscopic treatment sections heal within a few hours. In the weeks that follow, the skin produces fresh collagen, which smoothes and refines the skin's appearance.
