This stimulates the production of new collagen, which leads to more volume. Sunken areas of the face look young and fresh again, while the elasticity and density of the tissue and the firmness of the skin are improved. The result lasts for two to four years, sometimes even longer. After that, the result slowly regresses according to the influence of genes, environment and lifestyle. Even if the effect slowly disappears over the years, up to 50% of the result usually remains forever.
Sculptra® is not a pure filling material with an immediate effect, such as hyaluronic acid or autologous fat, but a stimulant for the body's own new collagen formation. For this reason, it takes some time (several months, usually two) for the final result to become visible. Depending on the desired result, one to four sessions, usually two, are necessary until the perfect result is achieved.
Sculptra® can do more than just fill in wrinkles. By stimulating the body's own connective tissue, it is possible to restore youthful elasticity and lost contours to entire areas of the face (so-called "liquid lifting"). Excellent, long-lasting results are also achieved in the treatment of deep wrinkles in the décolleté.
Good results are visible immediately after the treatment. Over the next two to three weeks, the liquid in the Sculptra® solution is absorbed and the stimulating effect of the substance begins to build up the tissue. For this reason, it usually takes eight to twelve weeks before the final result is visible. Further treatment can then be carried out as required. The number of treatments required to achieve the final result depends on the patient's initial findings and their wishes. One treatment is usually sufficient for small volume defects, while two or more treatments are required for very pronounced signs of ageing on the face. Most Sculptra® patients are very satisfied with the results after two treatments.

Sculptra® is injected into the deep area of the dermis or the uppermost layer of the subcutis. In the first phase, the injected poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra®) immediately fills the volume defects and wrinkles due to the water contained in the solution. Within a few days, the water in the Sculptra® solution is absorbed by the body and the filling effect diminishes slightly. The second phase of the Sculptra® mechanism of action then begins: stimulation of the body's own collagen production for the natural, long-lasting build-up of connective tissue and thus to compensate for wrinkles, contour changes and volume defects.
The great advantage of Sculptra®: It works for a very long time, on average 2 years and longer. Four studies prove the long-lasting effect of Sculptra®.
The study proves the significant increase in collagen after 3 months: over 66% more collagen.
In contrast to fillers, missing volume is not immediately compensated for by the injected material, but by the natural build-up of the body's own collagen, which, however, takes several weeks. The effect is therefore very natural and usually lasts for two years, but in our own experience it often lasts considerably longer - sometimes even forever.
One disadvantage of Sculptra® is that only certain areas of the face such as large deep wrinkles, sunken areas of the face, cheeks and temples can be injected, but not small, fine wrinkle lines. Sculptra® is also not suitable for filling lips or the eye area.
In summary, Sculptra® is an optimal substance for long-lasting results in the face for deep wrinkles, sunken areas of the face and for the décolleté. In contrast to other fillers, however, it takes a little patience to achieve the final result, which lasts for a very long time (years).
A 2024 clinical study confirms the long-term effectiveness and safety of Sculptra® (injectable poly-L-lactic acid) for reducing moderate to severe cheek wrinkles. In a 12-month, randomized, evaluator-blinded trial, over 70% of participants showed visible improvement in skin smoothness, firmness, and radiance – compared to just 26% in the no-treatment group.
Participants also reported high satisfaction with natural-looking results and overall facial rejuvenation. Side effects were mild and temporary.
Independent studies show up to 66% more type-I collagen just 3 months after treatment. This supports the long-term volumising and skin-rejuvenating effect of poly-L-lactic acid.
