The latest trend in medicine is shifting from conventional fillers such as hyaluronic acid to collagen and skin boosters. These innovative treatments promote natural skin renewal through targeted injections either directly into the skin or subcutaneously. While polylactate (Sculptra) and autologous blood (PRP) have been known for many years to stimulate collagen formation, there are now promising developments that support skin regeneration at a cellular level. The new substances emerging in aesthetic medicine are polynucleotides and exosomes.
It was in all the American magazines: Jennifer Aniston had salmon DNA injected to treat her bags under her eyes – and successfully so. Since then, this treatment, which is based on polynucleotides, has gone viral worldwide and conquered aesthetic medicine. Studies show that certain parts of cellular genetic information can lead to remarkable skin rejuvenation. The segments extracted from DNA are called polynucleotides. They are fundamental building blocks of life and play a crucial role in cell regeneration, the immune system as well as intestinal health. Their regenerative effect has now also been discovered for aesthetic medicine, where they are used in the form of an injectable gel. Polynucleotides improve the hydration of the skin and eliminate free radicals, the main cause of skin ageing. They promote the growth of connective tissue cells and support the production of the body's own collagen and elastic fibers. This stimulation of natural cell regeneration leads to improved skin quality and elasticity, making the skin appear more radiant and rejuvenated. The treatment takes around 30 minutes and is virtually painless. If desired, it can be carried out in an ultra-short twilight sleep. For optimal results, the treatment should be performed 3-4 times at intervals of 2-3 weeks and then repeated every three months for maintenance. As this is a regenerative therapy in which the body itself becomes active, visible results can be expected after 2-3 months.
The areas of application for polynucleotides are diverse and range from the face, scalp, décolleté and neck to the sensitive skin around the eyes. Treatment with these new, injectable polynucleotides offers a natural way of rejuvenating and improving the skin by stimulating the body's own processes. In contrast to fillers, only biomaterials that are ecologically sound and sustainable are injected.
Polynucleotides are special proteins naturally present in every living cell. The products used for aesthetic purposes are derived from salmon DNA due to their excellent compatibility. Allergies and intolerances are very rare.
Polynucleotides act as strong biostimulators and increase skin hydration. In the days and weeks following treatment, the skin becomes noticeably firmer and tighter. Biostimulators are also effective for inflammation and scars. Since polynucleotides are based on biological material, they are considered a sustainable treatment.
Biostimulators with polynucleotides stimulate skin renewal and improve the overall skin structure. Polynucleotides bind water and offer effective protection against free radicals (oxygen compounds that accelerate skin aging). Injecting them under the skin stimulates the regeneration of connective tissue cells. The skin increases its collagen and elastin production and remodels itself – becoming visibly and noticeably smoother and more elastic within weeks.
Polynucleotides are mixed with hyaluronic acid and injected as a gel, so some results are visible immediately after the treatment. However, the biostimulatory effect takes several weeks to develop.
The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. There is usually no downtime. You can resume your normal activities immediately after the injection. Depending on the area treated, the procedure takes about 20–40 minutes. We use ultra-fine needles, so the treatment is only mildly uncomfortable and rarely painful. On request, we offer the treatment under light sedation.
Polynucleotides also deliver excellent results for acne scars and dry, rough skin. Depending on the skin condition, one or several treatments may be needed at intervals of 2–4 weeks.
Polynucleotide treatment is suitable for younger skin from age 30 to treat early signs of aging or enlarged pores. It also improves overall skin texture. Polynucleotides are effective antioxidants and help prevent premature aging.
In older patients, or with sagging skin and deep wrinkles – especially in the cheek and chin area (marionette lines) – biostimulators can produce excellent results. The skin appears refreshed and rejuvenated within a few days. Skin structure and facial contours become firmer and continue to improve over the following weeks. Depending on goals and condition, the treatment may be repeated 2–3 times at a few weeks’ interval.
Polynucleotides are usually combined with hyaluronic acid. Depending on the skin and patient preferences, we often combine this with radiofrequency (like Morpheus 8), additional fillers, threads, or botulinum toxin. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) can also be added to enhance the effect.
To achieve optimal results, we recommend 4 initial treatments spaced 2–3 weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every 3 months. Unlike other fillers that show immediate results, polynucleotides require some patience, with the best effects visible after 2–3 months.
Polynucleotides are generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are local reactions like redness, swelling, or bruising. These are usually mild and disappear within a few days. Serious side effects, such as allergic reactions or infections, are extremely rare. All risks will be thoroughly discussed during your consultation.
If needed, you can cool the treated area gently. Avoid sports, saunas, and tanning beds for a few days. We also recommend using high SPF sunscreen (e.g., DR. NL Sunscreen) and a hydrating day serum (e.g., DR. NL Firming Serum).
Results are typically visible within a few weeks and can last up to 12 months. Polynucleotides interact with specific receptors in skin cells, promoting cell regeneration and the formation of new collagen and elastin fibers (biostimulation). This leads to smoother, firmer, and younger-looking skin.
Suitable combination treatments depend on your skin type and aesthetic goals. We often combine polynucleotide therapy with wrinkle fillers, Morpheus 8, ultrasound therapy, peels, laser treatments, or Profhilo – as combination therapies often deliver the most effective results.
For optimal results, we recommend 3–4 treatments spaced 2–3 weeks apart.
