However, there are also other causes of hair loss. Diseases such as alopecia areata – in which a malfunction of the immune system destroys hair follicles – cause circular hair loss. Other causes include hormonal dysfunctions such as hypothyroidism, insulin or vitamin deficiency (e.g., vitamin B), insufficient trace elements or iron deficiency. Of course, serious illnesses (e.g., infections, cancer) can also lead to hair loss.
Hair loss is caused by reduced blood flow to the follicles. Hair follicles become smaller and smaller and shrink – the hair becomes thinner and thinner until it falls out.
Until now, drugs such as Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride) have been the treatment of choice for male hair loss. However, the great effort involved (daily application of the solutions) and side effects such as sexual reluctance and erectile dysfunction have led many men to discontinue the therapy in frustration. In addition, drug treatment only works for one in four men. Unfortunately, until now there were hardly any alternatives that could have stimulated hair growth again, meaning that hair transplants were often the only option for regaining scalp hair.
Recently, there has been an alternative whose effectiveness has been proven in various studies – the use of blood plasma. In autologous blood therapy (see also vampire lifting), this is obtained from the patient's own blood by gently centrifuging it under certain conditions. The latest studies show that autologous blood therapy has incredible healing effects, as the blood plasma contains high doses of growth factors, messenger substances, hormones and other substances that stimulate and renew cell regeneration. In orthopaedics, for example, autologous blood therapy is used with great success for osteoarthritis and other "degenerative diseases". In aesthetic medicine, too, autologous blood therapy has become an important pillar of treatment in anti-ageing therapies for the face.
Recently, autologous blood therapy has also been used to revitalize hair follicles on the scalp – with outstanding success. After just one treatment of the scalp with autologous blood therapy, hair loss stops, and the follicles recover. As a rule, 3 treatments at intervals of 4 weeks are necessary to achieve an optimal result. The final result is usually visible after 8 months – a significantly stronger head of hair. We recommend a maintenance treatment once a year; there are no known side effects with autologous blood therapy.
The best results are achieved if treatment is carried out at the onset of hair loss. Once hair follicles have been completely destroyed, autologous blood therapy unfortunately no longer helps.
Our blood consists of 6% platelets (thrombocytes), a concentrate of these blood components is required for effective treatment. For this purpose, some blood is taken from a vein in the arm and centrifuged using a special reagent tube. The resulting plasma is immediately injected into the scalp affected by hair loss using the finest microneedles during autologous blood therapy.
The treatment takes about an hour and is completely painless as it is carried out in twilight sleep. Alternatively, the scalp can be desensitized beforehand with an anaesthetic cream. You can return to work, exercise, etc. immediately afterwards. In rare cases, the scalp may swell a little, but this is no longer visible after a short time. Other side effects such as allergies, intolerances etc. do not occur because autologous blood therapy is the body's own product.
The cost of autologous blood therapy for hair loss is CHF 700.00 per treatment.
Treatment example: Three treatments were carried out and the results were documented after one year.
