The masseter muscle attaches to the lower side of the jaw approximately in the middle. A very prominent muscle takes away the V-shape of a face and makes it look more square. In addition, a prominent masseter muscle can be associated with "bruxism" (night-time teeth grinding).
The treatment of choice is the injection of botulinum toxin, which leads to a permanent reduction in the size of this muscle. Unlike other facial muscles, the masseter muscle does not completely regress. It usually takes more than one treatment for good results. The treatment itself (sometimes known as "face slimming" treatment) only takes a few minutes and is virtually painless, with effects becoming noticeable after a few days.
