In addition to the aesthetic impairment, labia minora that are too large can lead to functional complaints such as mechanical irritation with tight clothing or pain during sport and sexual intercourse. The psychological burden caused by the development of inhibitions and complexes towards the partner as well as in other social situations (swimming pool, sport) should also not be neglected.
In labiaplasty, it is important that the labia minora are not simply cut off, but merely reduced and shaped to achieve a normal appearance and proper function. In individual cases, a reduction or tightening of the female foreskin (prepuce) may also be useful, whereby care must be taken to ensure that the clitoris is sufficiently covered, as otherwise it may become unpleasantly overstimulated. Depending on the findings, an augmentation of the labia minora can be combined.
The procedure takes about 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis (in twilight sleep if desired). The skin of the labia minora is surgically shortened and sculpted.
Although the procedure is harmless, it is surgically complex. A sophisticated technique is required to sculpt the labia without causing scarring, which can subsequently impair sexual sensation during intercourse.
