If the cause of the hair loss can be diagnosed and is not genetic, a medical hair loss treatment can be initiated based on this, which will then (hopefully) slow down the hair loss. In the case of hormonal hair loss, medication is only partially or rarely effective. They only work if taken regularly, but can cause unwanted side effects, such as potency problems in men.
If hair loss is detected at an early stage, before it is very advanced, we recommend autologous blood therapy against hair loss (PRP, platelet-rich plasma) as the treatment of choice for thinning hair. The PRP is obtained from the patient's own blood. Fine injections into the scalp activate the hair follicles, which can slow down hair loss. Hair that has already fallen out cannot be restored with this treatment; in this case, the hair can only be "restored" with a hair transplant. In this case, individual hairs are removed from the unaffected areas and implanted into the bald patches. The hair implanted in this way lasts permanently.
There are various reasons that lead to sudden or gradual hair loss. These include hormonal and glandular problems (e.g., thyroid gland), a lack of certain nutrients (e.g. iron deficiency) as well as serious illnesses or genetics. In most cases, hair loss in both men and women is genetically predetermined and is caused by hormonal regression of the hair follicle. This type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia – "hair loss due to male hormones". This hair loss often begins at a young age and increases steadily over the years. The hormone dihydrotestosterone plays the key role here: It causes the hair to become thinner and thinner in certain areas (for example above the forehead, on the crown of the head or at the temples) and eventually fall out. In women, complete baldness is rather rare; hair loss usually occurs in the form of thinning. In men, however, follicular regression often leads to the complete loss of hair follicles and complete baldness.
