In the case of spider veins, however, the treatment is almost always combined with so-called foam sclerotherapy. During treatment, high-energy light pulses are directed into the upper skin. The light is completely absorbed by the red pigment of the vessels.
It heats up for a very short time (milliseconds), and this heat then causes the vessel wall to shrink – the vessel disappears. This phenomenon is called "selective photothermolysis".
The best results are achieved in patients with fair skin. The treatment only takes a short time, is somewhat uncomfortable and leads to slight reddening of the facial skin, which can sometimes last for 2-3 days. However, this redness often disappears after just a few hours.
