Whether the autologous fat grows into the breast forever depends on many factors. Lifestyle, constitution, nicotine etc. all have an influence on the survival of the fat cells. Breast augmentation with autologous fat is ideal for women with typical fat distribution disorders (plenty of fat on the thighs and buttocks with a slim upper body and few breasts). No. Autologous fat is currently experiencing a real boom as a natural filler for the breasts, face, buttocks, or other areas of the body. The strong demand is due to two main reasons: firstly, patients have lost trust in silicone implants after scandals in France, and secondly, the technique has improved significantly – today, up to 70% of the fat integrates successfully into the breast. Issues like cysts, calcifications, and other complications are now a thing of the past.
At the centre of these new techniques is water jet-assisted liposuction, also known as WAL or BEAULI. In this method, fat is gently “washed out” from fat deposits, resulting in a high concentration of viable fat and stem cells – which ensures excellent integration rates. These positive developments have led to autologous fat increasingly being used for breast reconstruction after cancer surgeries.
In principle, yes. However, sagging breasts cannot be lifted or reshaped using fat alone. Ideal candidates have well-shaped breasts that they wish to enlarge. Another good indication is volume loss in the upper breast area – fat can restore volume there. If reshaping is needed, a breast lift, implant, or a combination of both may be necessary.
Once integrated, autologous fat is permanent – it becomes part of the normal metabolic processes of the breast, which are influenced by the patient’s hormonal state.
The only downside is that a small amount of liposuction is needed to harvest the fat. However, many women see this as a welcome benefit – unwanted fat can be removed, while the breasts are enhanced in the same session.
